The geographic origin of maize in South America, like Peru and Mexico. The Indian corn, known as maize was a huge food source for all the different native American groups. There advanced agricultural practices were based on the production of maize. This allowed the Indians to feed large portions of people. This caused the native Americans to become very sophisticated by the time the Europeans came, they even taught them how to grow maize. The timing of the corn in different localities explains why there are different levels of sophistication between some Native American groups and the Europeans. For example, the Aztecs society was far more advanced than the pueblos because the corn originated in South America.

The pueblos of the southwest, the Mound Builders of the Ohio valley river, and the Mississippian group of the lower midwest are examples of the trend in question one because since they knew how to grow corn, they were able to feed large groups of people. They sustained large settlements because of the maize. Overall the groups of North America used corn to help them become more sophisticated and advanced.

Europeans were able to subdue the native Americans “with relative ease” because no dense concentration of populations(advanced societies) comparable to the Aztecs existed outside of Mexico. This means that the Europeans were able to overtake the North American groups because they were not as advanced. This relates to question 1 because the timing of the corn in different localities caused this.
